What is a PIN pin and what is it used for?
A PIN pin (contact pin) is a metal part, usually copper or copper alloy with plating, that conducts current, connects circuits and carries signals in connectors, relays, transformers, motors, power modules and other electronic devices.
Should I choose loose square pins or tape square pins?
Loose pins suit manual assembly, medium volumes or pins that need custom bends. Tape pins feed straight into automatic insertion machines, so they suit high-volume connector and header production. HIFAM tape pins come in 8 pitches from 1.27 to 3.81 mm.
What is a fish-eye (press-fit) pin?
A fish-eye pin has a compliant eye-shaped section that is pressed into a plated PCB hole to make an electrical and mechanical connection without soldering. HIFAM fish-eye pins are certified to IEC 60352-5, the standard for solderless press-in connections.
Tin plating or gold plating?
Tin plating is low-cost and solders well, suiting most connectors and PCBs. Gold plating gives low contact resistance and strong oxidation resistance for low-level signals, frequent mating or harsh environments. PROSTECH recommends plating based on your application.
