High temperature chain lubrication keeps oven, dryer and conveyor chains running reliably at temperatures where ordinary oils smoke, evaporate and turn into carbon. As an authorized distributor of ROCOL (ITW) in Vietnam, PROSTECH helps maintenance teams choose the right chain lubricant by temperature, environment and food safety requirement – from standard conveyors to ovens at +550°C.
Why Does Chain Lubrication Matter?
Chain failure causes expensive downtime and lost production. Correct lubrication protects costly chain and drive systems from excessive wear and corrosion, extends chain life, improves the working environment and reduces unplanned stoppages.
Common effects of poor or no lubrication:
- Noisy operation – squeaking and rattling chains
- Chain slippage and loss of alignment
- Excessive wear of chains and sprockets
- Corrosion
Leading to: seizure and premature chain failure, costly downtime, and unnecessary spending on replacement chains and sprockets.
Common Problems on High Temperature Chains
- Smoke and odour around ovens: conventional oils evaporate at high temperature, creating fumes and requiring frequent re-lubrication.
- Carbon and varnish deposits: oil that oxidizes on the chain turns into hard residues that block oil-ways, stiffen links and force production stops for chain cleaning.
- Dripping and product contamination: excess or unsuitable oil can drip onto products – a critical issue in food, packaging and electronics lines.
- Chain wear and jamming: without a stable lubricant film at temperature, pins and bushes wear quickly and chains elongate or seize.
Synthetic ester high temperature chain oils address these problems through high thermal stability, low evaporation and minimal deposit formation. According to ROCOL, its chain lubricants typically last up to three times longer than conventional chain lubricants, extending re-lubrication intervals.
How to Choose the Right Chain Lubricant
Start from the primary operating condition of the chain, then check the application method (aerosol, manual or automatic lubricator) and whether food safety approval is required.
| Operating condition | ROCOL product | Form / application | Temperature range |
| Normal conditions (incl. wet, humid, aggressive environments) | CHAIN & DRIVE Spray | Aerosol spray | -30°C to +150°C |
| Normal conditions | CHAIN & DRIVE Fluid | Fluid – manual / automatic | -15°C to +120°C |
| Heavy duty, high load (e.g. fork lift truck chains) | CHAINGUARD Hi-Load Spray (with MoS2) | Aerosol spray | -30°C to +180°C |
| Medium–high temperature | CHAINGUARD 230 | Fluid – manual / automatic | +10°C to +230°C |
| High temperature | CHAINGUARD 280 | Fluid – manual / automatic | 0°C to +280°C |
| High temperature, food grade (NSF H1) | FOODLUBE® XT Chain Fluid | Fluid – automatic / electrostatic / manual | 0°C to +280°C |
| Extra high temperature or where wet lubricant cannot be tolerated | CHAINGUARD 550 (graphited, dry film) | Fluid – manual | -10°C to +550°C |
| Dusty conditions / dry film required | DRY MOLY Spray (resin bonded MoS2) | Aerosol spray | -50°C to +450°C |
Temperature ranges are from ROCOL technical literature. If in doubt, contact PROSTECH for a recommendation based on your equipment.
Featured High Temperature Chain Oils
ROCOL® Chainguard 280 – for industrial ovens and conveyors up to 280°C
Synthetic ester chain oil with a special antioxidant package: evaporation loss only 2.6% at 200°C, DSC oxidation onset 325°C, flash point above 300°C. Optimum viscosity (225 cSt at 40°C) for automatic lubricators. Typical uses: paint stoving ovens, curing and drying ovens, textile stenters and hot conveyors. Packs: 5L (22235), 20L (22236).
ROCOL® FOODLUBE® XT Chain Fluid – food grade up to 280°C
NSF H1 registered (148169), ISO 21469, NSF 537 PFAS-free, Halal and Kosher certified. Evaporation loss 1% in 6 hours at 200°C, free from paint wetting impairment substances (PWIS) and ideal for electrostatic lubrication systems. Typical uses: bakery ovens, canning, food and beverage dryers, packaging lines and paint shops. Packs: 20L (15800), 200L (15801).
ROCOL® Chainguard 230 and Chainguard 550
Chainguard 230 is a long life ester chain oil for chains running continuously up to 230°C; it does not form hard carbon deposits and is approved by Brückner for stenter chains. Chainguard 550 is a graphited dry film lubricant for oven chains up to 550°C: the carrier evaporates cleanly as the oven heats up, leaving no carbonised residue. Apply it below 120°C for full penetration. Contact PROSTECH for availability.
Applications by Industry
- Automotive and motorcycle: paint stoving ovens and paint shop conveyors (Chainguard 280; FOODLUBE XT where PWIS-free is required)
- Electronics: curing ovens and hot conveyors; for SMT reflow oven chains, PROSTECH checks compatibility with the oven’s lubrication system and OEM recommendation and arranges a trial
- Food and beverage: bakery ovens, canning and bottle dryers, packaging tunnels (FOODLUBE XT Chain Fluid)
- Textile: stenter and drying machine chains (Chainguard 230 / 280)
- Extreme temperature ovens: paint stoving and bakery oven chains above 280°C, or where a dry film is required (Chainguard 550)
- General industry and logistics: drive chains, conveyors and fork lift truck chains (CHAIN & DRIVE, Chainguard Hi-Load Spray)

Frequently Asked Questions about High Temperature Chain Lubrication
Q: What is the best lubricant for high temperature oven chains?
A: For chains up to about 280°C, a synthetic ester chain oil with antioxidants – such as ROCOL Chainguard 280 – is typically the best choice because it evaporates slowly and leaves minimal deposits. Above 280°C, or where a wet film cannot be tolerated, a graphited dry film lubricant such as ROCOL Chainguard 550 (up to 550°C) is used.
Q: Why does my oven chain oil smoke and leave carbon deposits?
A: Conventional mineral oils evaporate and oxidize at high temperature. The evaporated part becomes smoke; the oxidized part becomes carbon and varnish on the chain. High temperature ester oils with low evaporation and high oxidation resistance greatly reduce both.
Q: Do I need a food grade chain lubricant?
A: If incidental contact between the lubricant and food, beverage or packaging is possible, use an NSF H1 registered lubricant such as ROCOL FOODLUBE XT Chain Fluid.
Q: Can high temperature chain oils be used with automatic lubrication systems?
A: Yes. ROCOL Chainguard 230, Chainguard 280 and FOODLUBE XT Chain Fluid are designed for automatic lubricators; FOODLUBE XT is also ideal for electrostatic systems. They can also be applied manually by brush or oilcan.
Q: How do I switch to a new chain oil?
A: ROCOL ester chain oils are compatible with most ester-based oils. Clean the chain and lubrication system before switching for best results. PROSTECH can check your current oil and plan the changeover and trial with you.
Q: Where can I buy ROCOL chain lubricants in Vietnam?
A: PROSTECH is an authorized distributor of ROCOL (ITW) in Vietnam. Contact PROSTECH for quotations, samples, TDS/SDS documents and technical support.
