Product Introduction
We offer 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive EC-3984 as a version of 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 3109-2 in a sprayable liquid form. It delivers excellent performance up to 300°F (149°C). Our adhesive is commonly used for bonding wire mesh on engine nacelles, thrust reversers, and acoustic panels for aircraft and aircraft engines.
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive EC-3984 combines the strength and performance of our 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 3109-2 with the convenience and efficiency of a spray for precise coating requirements or to cover larger areas economically and effectively. Our sprayable formula can be used to hold screens or other components in place that need structural adhesive strength at elevated temperatures. Ideal for bonding wire mesh on engine nacelles, thrust reversers, and acoustic panels for aircraft and aircraft engines, this adhesive delivers reliable performance in temperatures up to 300°F (149°C). 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive EC-3984 can be cured at temperatures as low as 225°F (107°C) and up to 350°F (177°C). This variable cure rate combined with the film’s easy handling gives you flexibility to design efficient processes.
3M™ epoxy adhesives are part of the class of adhesives called “structural adhesives,” which also includes polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. Epoxy adhesives are typically formulated with reactive components (Base and Accelerator) that cure when mixed to form a solid plastic material. 3M provides epoxy adhesives in multiple formats to support your processing needs:
- Two Part: Base and Accelerator are stored separately to ensure a long shelf life even at room temperature. These are available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System or in bulk for larger operations. You can reduce waste by saving non-mixed material for later jobs.
- One Part: Pre-mixed and shipped frozen. Store in a freezer, thaw when ready to use.
- Adhesive Films: Pre-mixed and formed into films that can be cut to size. These films require frozen storage.
In two-part epoxy adhesives, once mixed in the specified ratio, they begin curing with a limited working time for application and positioning. Similarly, one-part adhesives have a limited “out time” after thawing, usually ranging from a few minutes to 48 hours or more.
In general, epoxy adhesives provide high shear and peel strength with excellent environmental resistance. These adhesives are favored for their mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and ease of use. Depending on the formulation, epoxy adhesives can be flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, fast or slow setting, and suitable for room temperature or elevated temperature curing. Epoxy adhesives are among the strongest available, making them ideal for demanding structural bonding tasks.
