Product Introduction
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-2792 B/A is a toughened, two-part epoxy adhesive that cures at room temperature and delivers high shear and peel strength, making it an excellent choice for the most demanding aerospace and industrial applications. This epoxy adhesive maintains its bond strength in both high and low temperatures, and it performs well under challenging environmental conditions.
Designed to replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds, 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-2792 B/A provides excellent bonding to a wide range of substrates including metals, woods, ceramics, many plastics, and glass. It is conveniently dispensed in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, promoting minimal waste and professional-grade results. With a 2:1 mix ratio and a 60-minute work time, this adhesive allows ample time for precise fit adjustments before setting. It reaches handling strength in approximately 5 hours and fully cures in 24 hours at 72°F (22°C).
What Are Epoxy Adhesives?
3M™ epoxy adhesives belong to the family of structural adhesives, alongside polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. They are typically composed of reactive components—a Base and an Accelerator—that cure upon mixing to form a strong, solid material. 3M offers epoxy adhesives in multiple formats to accommodate diverse processing needs:
- Two-Part Adhesives: The Base and Accelerator are stored separately, allowing for a long shelf life at room temperature. These adhesives can be dispensed with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, which simultaneously meters, mixes, and applies the adhesive. This format reduces waste as unmixed material can be stored for later use.
- One-Part Adhesives: Pre-mixed and shipped frozen, these adhesives are stored in a freezer and thawed before use.
- Adhesive Films: Pre-mixed and processed into films that can be precisely cut and placed into bond lines. These films must be stored frozen and offer convenient application for specific bonding needs.
Once mixed, two-part epoxy adhesives begin curing and offer a limited work life during which they can be applied and repositioned. Similarly, one-part adhesives have a limited out-time once thawed. Depending on the formulation, work life can range from a few minutes to over 48 hours.
Epoxy adhesives are known for high shear and peel strengths, excellent mechanical strength, and strong resistance to chemicals and environmental factors. Their versatility allows for a range of formulations that can be rigid or flexible, transparent or opaque, fast-setting or slow-setting, and suitable for room temperature or elevated temperature curing. As some of the strongest adhesives available, they are widely used in applications requiring durability and long-lasting performance.
