This high-performance adhesive can replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds, offering a lightweight and streamlined bonding solution. It bonds effectively to a wide variety of substrates including metals, woods, ceramics, many plastics, and glass. With a convenient 2:1 mix ratio, it is available in bulk or in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, allowing precise dispensing with minimal waste.
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC 460 provides a generous 60-minute work time, allowing ample opportunity to position and adjust components before setting. It reaches handling strength in approximately 5 hours and fully cures in 24 hours at room temperature (72°F / 22°C).

What Are Epoxy Adhesives?
3M™ epoxy adhesives belong to the category of structural adhesives, which also includes polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. These adhesives are typically composed of reactive components (Base and Accelerator) that, when mixed, undergo a chemical reaction to form a strong, solid plastic material. 3M offers epoxy adhesives in various formats to meet different processing requirements:
- Two-Part: The Base and Accelerator are stored separately, allowing for extended shelf life at room temperature. These adhesives are available in duo-pak cartridges compatible with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System for simultaneous metering, mixing, and dispensing. Bulk formats are also available for large-scale operations, minimizing waste by preserving unmixed material for future use.
- One-Part: These adhesives are pre-mixed and shipped frozen. They are stored in a freezer and thawed when ready for use.
- Adhesive Films: Pre-mixed and processed into film form, these adhesives are cut to size and placed directly into the bond line. They must be stored frozen and offer clean, easy application.
Once mixed, two-part epoxy adhesives begin curing immediately, offering a limited work life during which they must be applied and components positioned. Similarly, one-part adhesives have a limited “out time” after thawing. This work time or out time can range from a few minutes to over 48 hours.
Epoxy adhesives are valued for their high shear and peel strengths, excellent environmental resistance, and superior mechanical and chemical durability. Depending on their formulation, they can be flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, quick or slow setting, and suitable for room temperature or elevated temperature cures.
