Product Introduction
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-2216 B/A Gray is a flexible, two-part, room-temperature curing epoxy adhesive that delivers high shear and peel strength, making it an excellent solution for demanding aerospace applications. It maintains bond strength even at low temperatures and withstands harsh environmental conditions.
This high-performance epoxy adhesive is ideal for replacing mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds. It provides excellent adhesion on metals and many plastics and can be dispensed in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, ensuring minimal waste and professional-grade results. Featuring a 2:3 mix ratio, it offers a 90-minute work life to allow proper positioning and adjustment before setting. The adhesive reaches handling strength in about 12 hours and fully cures within 7 days at room temperature (72°F / 22°C), with the option for accelerated curing using heat. It is particularly suitable for bonding applications requiring cryogenic temperature performance and is widely used for composite laminate edge sealing.
Epoxy adhesives, such as 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EC-2216 B/A Gray, are part of the structural adhesive category, alongside polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. They are typically composed of reactive components—Base and Accelerator—that cure when mixed, forming a solid plastic material. 3M offers epoxy adhesives in multiple formats to suit different processing needs:
Two Part: This format stores the Base and Accelerator separately, allowing a long shelf life at room temperature. Available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System or in bulk quantities for larger jobs. This enables on-demand mixing, reducing waste by preserving unused portions.
One Part: Pre-mixed and shipped frozen, requiring storage in a freezer until needed. Once thawed, the adhesive has a limited working time for application.
Adhesive Films: Pre-mixed and converted into a film format that can be cut to specific sizes and placed directly onto bond lines. These films require frozen storage and are available in various weights, thicknesses, and supports.
In two-part adhesives, the curing process starts immediately after mixing. These adhesives offer a defined working time during which components can be aligned and bonded. Likewise, one-part adhesives have a specific out time after thawing before they must be applied. Work times can range from a few minutes to over 48 hours.
Epoxy adhesives are favored for their exceptional mechanical strength, high shear and peel strengths, and excellent resistance to chemicals and environmental stressors. They can be formulated to be flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, fast- or slow-setting, and capable of curing at either room or elevated temperatures, making them highly versatile for critical bonding applications.
3M remains a trusted partner in the aerospace and related industries, providing advanced adhesives, sealants, and surface protection products that reduce process times, improve efficiencies, and lower overall aircraft weight. Known for its high standards of quality and performance, 3M delivers products that offer long-term reliability, reducing waste and minimizing rework costs across industries.
