Product Introduction
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive EC-1648 B/A is a two-part, room temperature curing adhesive designed for bonding polyester and metal panels to themselves and to each other. It cures at 75°F (24°C) to form a strong, durable bond within 24 to 48 hours, offering good shear, peel, and impact resistance for reliability and durability across a wide range of environments. This unique formula provides increased temperature resistance compared to similar adhesives like 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-1838 B/A.
Formulated as a non-sag paste, EC-1648 B/A does not drip, run, or migrate, even on vertical or overhead surfaces. It offers a 60-minute work life for precise part positioning and adjustment. The adhesive can be applied using a spatula, trowel, or automated dispensing equipment, making it suitable for both manual and high-volume production processes. It is designed to replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds in structural bonding applications.

What Are Epoxy Adhesives?
3M™ epoxy adhesives are part of the structural adhesives family, which also includes polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. These adhesives are formulated with reactive components (Base and Accelerator) that chemically cure to form solid, durable plastic materials. 3M provides epoxy adhesives in various formats to suit different needs:
- Two-Part: Base and Accelerator are stored separately for long shelf life and mixed at the point of use. Available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System or in bulk for high-volume applications. This allows for precise metering and minimal waste.
- One-Part: Pre-mixed and shipped frozen, these adhesives require thawing before use, offering convenience and consistency for certain applications.
- Adhesive Films: Supplied in pre-mixed film format, these adhesives are cut to size and applied directly into bond lines. They are stored frozen and are ideal for clean, efficient application with precise thickness control.
Once mixed or thawed, epoxy adhesives provide a limited working time during which parts must be positioned and bonded. This work life can range from just a few minutes to several hours or even up to 48 hours, depending on the formulation.
Epoxy adhesives are widely recognized for their high shear and peel strength, excellent environmental resistance, and mechanical durability. They can be formulated to be flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, and may offer either fast or slow curing profiles. These properties make them suitable for a broad range of structural bonding applications.
