Product Introduction
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 555 is a family of thermosetting modified epoxy adhesives in film form that provides long-term durability and addresses specific challenges in metal and composite solid panel and honeycomb sandwich construction. Designed for applications requiring high fracture toughness, this adhesive film offers excellent shop handling characteristics and superior performance in harsh environments.
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 555 delivers excellent bonding strength with ease of use in shop environments. Available in a variety of weights and carriers, it meets a wide range of needs without excessive material costs. AF 555 provides high fracture toughness and peel strength, making it suitable for composites, metals in solid panels, and honeycomb sandwich fabrication. An unsupported version is also available for reticulation purposes.
This adhesive film performs well on multiple substrates and is compatible with various primers. It exhibits excellent pre-bond humidity performance on composite substrates, and has a one-year out time under ambient storage conditions. Once cured, it maintains high bond strength across a wide temperature range from -67°F to 325°F (-55°C to 163°C).
Compatible primers for use with 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 555 include:
• 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives Primer EW-5000
• 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives Primer EW-5000 AS
• 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives Primer EC-3917
Structural adhesive films offer advantages in aircraft design by reducing the need for rivets, enabling more innovative structures, and minimizing overall weight. These thermosetting epoxy films bond various substrates, including metals, composites, and honeycombs. Available in both supported and unsupported forms, they can be cured at temperatures from 180°F to 350°F. These films are cleaner and easier to use than paste adhesives, requiring no mixing and streamlining the bonding process.
3M remains a leader in adhesive innovation, providing products that enable lighter structures through reliable bonding of metal and composite components. This promotes better erosion resistance and reduced weight in aerospace designs.
