Product Introduction
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-3448 is a one-part epoxy adhesive formulated to cure at 250°F (121°C) for 60 minutes, forming a tough, rigid bond. This thixotropic adhesive meets aerospace bonding specifications for metal-to-metal bonding and pre-cured fiber-reinforced epoxy composite laminates. It is a paste version of the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesive Film AF 163-2 Film, offering excellent durability and reliable bonding in demanding applications.
Designed as a low-flow compound, this adhesive is ideal for vertical and overhead surfaces without run-off. Its soft-paste viscosity allows easy tooling and forming for various applications, and its easy-to-dispense, one-part formula simplifies the application process. 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-3448 provides excellent performance across a temperature range of -67°F (-55°C) to 225°F (107°C) with unusually high 180°F hot/wet durability. It meets multiple aerospace customer specifications for use in aircraft manufacturing and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) applications, offering outstanding environmental resistance for long-lasting bonds.
Its thick paste consistency makes it easy to spread over large areas, providing sufficient time for precise positioning of parts. The non-sagging formulation holds its shape upon application, minimizing the need for rework in overhead and vertical applications. The thixotropic nature of the adhesive enhances bond line control, promoting high-quality workmanship and reducing waste and excess weight. Additionally, its high impact resistance improves service life and reduces potential damage over time.

What Are Epoxy Adhesives?
3M™ epoxy adhesives belong to the family of structural adhesives, which also includes polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. These adhesives are formulated with reactive components that chemically cure to form solid plastic materials. 3M offers epoxy adhesives in various formats to accommodate different processing needs:
- Two-Part: Base and Accelerator are stored separately, allowing long shelf life at room temperature. These adhesives are available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, or in bulk for large-scale operations. Since mixing occurs at the point of use, non-mixed material can be saved for later, reducing waste.
- One-Part: Pre-mixed and shipped frozen. Users store the adhesive in a freezer, then thaw it before use.
- Adhesive Films: Pre-mixed and processed into film form, which can be cut to size and placed directly into bond lines. These films are stored frozen and offer easy, clean application.
In two-part epoxy adhesives, once mixed in the specified ratio, curing begins and offers a limited working time for application and positioning. Similarly, one-part adhesives have a limited “out time” after thawing, during which they must be used. Work life or out time ranges from minutes to over 48 hours, depending on the formulation.
Epoxy adhesives are known for their high shear and peel strengths, superior environmental resistance, and exceptional mechanical and chemical durability. Depending on their formulation, these adhesives can be flexible or rigid, quick or slow setting, transparent or opaque, and suited for room temperature or elevated temperature curing. Their versatility and superior performance make them ideal for applications demanding strong, durable bonds.
