With the increasing number of wireless devices, designers are challenged with various electromagnetic waves from multiple sources, radiating at the same spectrum of frequencies and resulting in electromagnetic interference (EMI).
In short, EMI shielding is for signal reduction
2. Why EMI shielding
– The continuous miniaturization of devices and the introduction of more and more electronics into everyday life
– High voltage electronics: PCBs right now need to be carried a lot higher voltage electronics to conduct more complex functions
How can EMI shielding help?
Prime intention of the EMI shielding is to avoid EMI that can leak inside and reach the the sensitive components that we want to protect.
We judge the effectiveness of EMI materials by shielding level (dB) (how much signal can be passed after going through the shielding, the rest will be absorbed into the shielding or be reflected to the emitter materials)
Two types of shielding in PCBs
Compartmental shielding (glue dispensing)
Conformal shielding (conformal coating/taping)
EMI Materials
– Aluminum
– Copper
– Steel
– Nickel
– Mu-Metal
– Polymer composites
