What is Manual Service Disconnect connector (MSD)?
Manual Service Disconnect connector is a manual maintenance protection switch with a high-voltage interlock function for high-voltage boxes or battery boxes of electric vehicles. Which is a tool-free solution for disconnecting the internal high voltage battery pack and protecting it from short circuits.
Why MSD must be sealed?
Manual Service Disconnect connector is commonly known as the fourth safety device used within a high voltage battery pack. This device is a method for breaking the electrical continuity within the pack for the purpose of vehicle service. The MSD is often a touch safe, removable enclosure containing the fuse. The MSD is not designed for removal while there is current flowing through the battery pack; the contactors must be opened prior to MSD removal. Removal of the MSD is useful for servicing the high voltage system of the vehicle because the positive and negative connections to the pack are no longer electrically connected.
As an important point, it is necessary to prevent MSD from environmental contaminants such as water, dust, chemical, oil, … In this case, there is no better choice than a reliable sealant.
Solutions for sealing a Manual Service Disconnect connector
Silicone pads is used as a reliable environmental seal that withstands repeated opening and closing. The materials’ flame resistance (UL-V0) contributes to the safety requirements for high voltage batteries. |
Depending on which kind of battery pack and which kind of Manual Service Disconnect is used, we would provide different sealing solutions including consultants in materials (sealants) and systems.
