Our 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-2216 B/A Translucent is a flexible, two-part, room-temperature curing epoxy adhesive that provides high shear and peel strength, making this an ideal adhesive for the most demanding aerospace applications. It maintains bond strength at low temperatures and stands up to challenging environmental conditions.
You can use this high-performance epoxy adhesive to replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds. 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive EC-2216 B/A Translucent is excellent for bonding a variety of substrates such as metals and many plastics. It can be dispensed in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System for minimal waste and professional results. The mix ratio is 1:1 and the adhesive provides a 120-minute work life to allow time to adjust fit prior to setting. The adhesive reaches handling strength in approximately 16 hours and is fully cured in 7 days (at 72° F / 22° C), but cure time can be accelerated with heat. This epoxy is excellent for creating bonds that can be used at cryogenic temperatures.
What Are Epoxy Adhesives?
3M™ epoxy adhesives are part of the class of adhesives called “structural adhesives,” which also includes polyurethane and acrylic adhesives. Epoxy adhesives are typically formulated with reactive components (Base and Accelerator) that cure when mixed to form a solid plastic material. 3M provides epoxy adhesives in multiple formats to support your processing needs:
- Two Part — In this format, the Base and Accelerator are stored separately, enabling the adhesive to have a long shelf life even at room temperature. These materials are available in duo-pak cartridges for use with the 3M™ EPX™ Applicator System, enabling simultaneous metering, mixing, and application. For larger-scale operations, bulk quantities are available. Because these parts are mixed at the point of use, you can reduce waste by saving unused material for later jobs.
- One Part — In this format, 3M does the mixing for you and ships it frozen. You store it in a freezer and thaw it when ready for use.
- Adhesive Films — In this one-part format, 3M not only does the mixing for you but also turns the adhesive into a film that can be cut to size and placed into your bond line. A variety of films with different weights, thicknesses, and supports are available. These films must be stored frozen.
In a two-part epoxy adhesive, once the two parts are mixed in their specified ratio, they begin the curing process and offer a limited working time for application and positioning. Similarly, in a one-part adhesive, there is a limited out-time after thawing during which the adhesive must be used. This work life or out-time can last from a few minutes to 48 hours or more.
In general, epoxy adhesives provide high shear and peel strengths with good environmental resistance. These adhesives are valued for their ease of use, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Depending on the formulation, epoxy adhesives can be flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, quick setting or slow setting, high flow or low flow, and capable of curing at room temperature or elevated temperatures.
